We're in the final few days of our 3-week series called What's right with the family. We started this week focusing on the youngsters... but today our focus changes to the older side of the family.
Seven practical steps to help us provide Christ like care for our parents
- We need to pay close attention to changes in our parents' lives.
- It's important that we recognize the variety of issues our parents are facing, such as the loss of a spouse, loneliness, declining health, etc.
- It's essential that we choose to forgive our parents for any wrongs they may have done to us.
- When we face tough decisions with our parents, seek out wise counsel.
- Recognize the value that God places on the wisdom of age.
- When you're forced to make a difficult decision, pray about it, seek counsel and then make the decision without regrets, trust God to guide you as you seek wisdom and you're going to avoid the trap of guilt and second guessing yourself.
- Whether your parents live in your home, their home, a retirement home or extended care facility, it's vital for the children and grandchildren to visit as often as possible and to let them know that they're not forgotten... your regular personal contact will help them and it will also help you to fulfill your God-given responsibility to provide Christ like parental care.

Susanna Wesley’s Six rules for raising children
#1 subdue self-will in a child and work together with God to save his soul
#2 teach them to pray as soon as they can speak.
#3 give them nothing they cry for and only what is good for them, if they ask for it politely.
#4 to prevent lying, punish no fault which is freely confessed, but never allow a rebellious sinful act to go unnoticed.
#5 commend and reward good behavior.
#6 strictly observe all promises you make to your child.
