Paul completes his encouraging letter by assuring Timothy that God has spoken and his word won’t change. It is “God-breathed-out” and profitable. The Word is to be preached with authority because there will be some who pervert it for their own purposes. God’s Word alone is the evidence that God has not been silent.

Paul warns Timothy that perilous times will dominate the last days and then he lists samples of negative (lovers of themselves, money, proud, blasphemers, unloving, etc.) and positive (following in doctrine, behavior, faith, longsuffering, perseverance, love, etc.) behaviors Timothy should look for.

In encouraging Timothy Paul uses several metaphors to teach Timothy the various disciplines of service, e.g. the disciplines of a son, a teacher, a solder, an athlete, a farmer and a diamond cutter.

Paul commends his friend Onesiphorus because he “often refreshed” Paul, “was not ashamed” of Paul, and was diligent in finding Paul. Onesiphorus is apparently already dead, but Paul uses him as a shining example to Timothy of what faithful commitment is all about.

Paul knew he was about to die and that Timothy would be left alone. He writes this final letter to encourage Timothy, and us, to serve God faithfully, courageously, confidently and consistently in troubling times.

Well, the good news of the Christmas season is this, no matter where you are today, no matter what your circumstances are. You have hope. And hope is found in the person of Jesus Christ, the one whose birth we celebrate this season.
And that’s the focus of Dr Kroll's message today as we wrap up our look at Christmas 2,000 Years Later... a message that declares that Jesus’ birth still brings hope.
