We're so glad to have you with us today as we begin a new two-week series called What keeps me from growing? And today we start by looking at Worry.
Seven practical reasons why you should not worry.
- When you worry, you accomplish nothing at all. Worry is of no value whatsoever.
- Not only will worrying not help you at all, but worrying is also harmful to you.
- Worry is often about things in the past that we have no way to deal with.
- Worry is often about things that will never actually happen.
- Worry is the antithesis of faith. If trusting God is His desire for us, worrying is clearly showing little respect for God.
- Worry opens the door for Christians to fall into deeper sin.
- Worry has a way of consuming us.
Here’s a promise to take with you today. Psalm 34:4, “I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.” Isn’t that a great promise?
A BAKER’S DOZEN OF VERSES ABOUT WORRY
- Matthew 6:25-27 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?
- Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
- Luke 12:25 “And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”
- John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
- 2 Thessalonians 3:16 “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.”
- Psalm 55:22 “Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.”
- Proverbs 12:25 “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.”
- Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
- 1 Peter 5:7 “Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”
- Isaiah 43:1-3 “But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.”
- Psalm 56:3 “‘When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.’”
- Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
- Romans 8:31 “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”
